Bow building is an ancient human Art that’s been a critical component of our survival as a species. Taking a large game animal with a self bow and arrow that you’ve made is an experience equal to no other. We will camp in rural Indiana at the workshop site or you can rent a place to stay nearby. we will work a stave into and bow and at the end of class we will learn how to match an arrow to your new bow by learning about archers paradox, arrow spine, draw weight, length, etc.

The cost of the class is $1200. You can reserve your spot with a $400 deposit and pay the remaining $800 before class starts. A cancellation less than a month in advance incurs a $400 administrative fee.

First lecture is Friday at 9am and the last one is Sunday after lunch. You are welcome to arrive Thursday evening to set up camp and stay until 5pm Sunday. You must be at least 18 years old to attend this class.

This is a collaboration between Matt Shull from White Pine Wilderness Academy and myself. Together we have over 25 years of experience as bowyers. We will be covering a lot of ground and everyone needs to be ready to absorb lots of information and apply it to the build.

We will meet Friday morning to do an introduction. We will discuss the history of bow building as well as wood qualities and proper selection, harvesting wood, splitting staves, and then everyone will pick a precut & cured choice stave for the weekend build.

This class is very comprehensive and will also cover:

Bow history and designs

Tillering and fine tillering

Types and ways of making bow strings

At the end of the weekend, we will match an arrow to your newly made bow so you can have an introduction to the art of arrow making.
