Survival Intensive at Chetumal Bay Mexico

$4,800.00

where: Belize/Mexico border at Chetumal Bay

when: Fall 2025 TBA

Cost: $4800

This class takes place in the mangrove jungles of Yucatan, Mayan territory. I’ve been scouting and fishing this bioregion for the last 20 years and is one of my favorite places to explore. although it feels and looks like paradise, thriving in this saltwater bay requires some skills that I’ve practiced during the last twenty years in these mangroves, as well as some knowledge of the specific flora and fauna of the bio region.

the trip includes all accommodations, transportation in Mexico. boat rides, all permits and licenses, park fees as well as the meals during class lectures. all class fees and materials are also included. During the 4 days at the bay we will be eating mostly what we catch and cook. in town during lectures, we’ll have delicious food prepared by the local cooks.

you must bring gear for hammock or tent camping and clothing appropriate for the weather, as well as any extra $ for tips, souvenirs, food when traveling from Cancun to Xcalak and back and the ocasional extra meal or snacks, you must purchase your flights in and out of Tulum International Airport.

this bay houses jaguars, crocodiles, as well as poisonous marine life and plants. learning to navigate this habitat could make the difference between just surviving, or thriving and enjoying this beautiful and diverse environment. we will have great opportunities to see Yucatan deer, different types of migratory birds, lots of mammals and reptiles that inhabit these jungles. tracking opportunities are endless so the place offers a great opportunity to sharpen those skills as well.

The class has a lot of emphasis in saltwater fishing. the area offers amazing opportunities for targeting inshore saltwater game fish species like tarpon, snook, permit, bonefish, jack and barracuda. we will learn not just survival fishing skills, but we will also have the opportunity to practice other fishing techniques like fly fishing, or using a low profile bait-caster. The ocean is also a great place for snorkeling, spearfishing and diving all of which are part of the class curriculum. The area also offers great opportunities to study local edible and medicinal plants.

Lectures will touch base on all the practical elements of survival: Shelters, Ancestral and more contemporary ways to make fire, water in a survival situation, and how to procure food. but we will also put a great deal of emphasis on the philosophy and psychology of survival, which is what makes or breaks a person in a survival situation.

The first two days will be spent doing lectures at a private lodge in the town of Xcalak, we will also prepare and practice for our expedition, we will then spend four days in a very remote part of the bay practicing survival skills. The last two days of the course are for recuperation/reintegration, analysis/conclusion, and more fishing and survival skills practice at the lodge or a visit to a mayan pyramid on the way home.

you must be in good physical condition to take this class.
